With its approx. 570.000 inhabitants, Essen comes in sixth place among major German cities. During the last century the Ruhr city became above all known for having the largest coal and steel industry on the European continent; it is much older than Berlin or Munich and even at that time could look back on a 1000 year history, including 650 years as a religious princedom.

Here, for a change, the focus is not on highly official political and economic links; rather, city partnerships help to establish links among people across Europe, and to open up the world especially to young people. Naturally, whatever comes along in the way of bilateral business is not turned away, but but the primary aim is to give Markus and Michelle, John and Hanne, Tatjana and Thomas an opportunity to become acquainted with one another.
