Old Essen Synagogue reopens as A house of Jewish culture

The former Essen synagogue, completed in 1913 by master builder Edmund Körner on behalf of the Jewish community, is the only free-standing major synagogue structure to have survived - at least externally - the Second World War. Today, it constitutes a unique cultural and architectural monument. The future House of Jewish Culture is, however, presented not as a museum and historical site but rather as a meeting place where people can come into contact with Jewish culture and the Jewish way of life.

Still-Life A40/B1 - Celebrating the metropolis

The people of the Ruhr metropolis and their guests and visitors have held a unique celebration of everyday life right in the middle of this major motorway on July 18, 2010, from 11:00 to 17:00 when the road will be blocked for traffic in both directions. As many as three million people turned up for a giant banquet at picnic tables along 60km (40 miles) of motorway between Duisburg and Dortmund. The 22,000 tables became a meeting place of cultures, generations and nationalities. At the same time, people were able to ride the opposite track from Duisburg to Dortmund using anything that has wheels but no engine.

Metropolis shopping: with the opening of the shopping center at Limbecker Platz, Essen is decidedly gaining ground in importance and denotation as an attractive city

More than 700 retail shops and boutiques are the reason why Essen’s downtown area has been such an attractive shopping place of long standing, and its cultural centers of attraction are quite convincing. Further enrichments for the Essen experience are city events and attractive restaurant and pubs offering a great selection of food and beverage.

Environmental zone

The environmental zones in the Ruhr district cover an area of approx. 225 km², and some of them extend over multiple cities. The Essen environmental zone covers the stretches of road between the city districts of Rüttenscheid, Bochold, Altenessen and Kray, and extends all the way to Gelsenkirchen. On 1 October 2008, all environmental zones in the entire Ruhr region were declared active at the same time. The same standards apply to all cities in the Ruhr region. Vehicles of hazardous goods class 1 that have no environmental safety plate are no longer permitted to enter the signposted areas.
