The Essen Institute of Adult Education is one of the largest state recognized further education institutions in North Rhine Westphalia, and the local centre for further education operated by the Council.

It is the examination centre in North Rhine Westphalia for the European language certificates based on the standards of the International Certificate Conference (ICC) recognized in 12 countries.
