In May 1977
60,000 m3 of concrete, 6,500 tons of construction steel, more than 360 km power cables and wires, 15,000 fluorescent lamps, 3,285 windows, and 2,100 doors were fitted or installed in the "new" town hall of Essen. From the first cut of the spade on 1 July 1975 to the official opening on 7 November 1979, and in addition to approx. 69,000 m2 of office space, further premises were created for a studio theatre, the parliamentary area, technical rooms, as well as parking spaces for more than 700 vehicles. The topping out ceremony was celebrated on 1 July 1977.
