| "The Southern centre of Essen is simply as green as many meadows" The Grugapark Essen came into being on the occasion of the "Große Ruhrländische Gartenbauausstellung 1929" and, with its 700,000 sqm now is one of the largest and most beautiful leisure parks in Europe. Not far from the hectic city centre, the Gruga soothes the senses of the city-dweller with a flowering fragrant splendour. The park does not only present a perfect flower splendour that changes with the seasons but also offers visitors attractive sports and game facilities in addition to a Japanese garden, tropical plant house, and alpinum. A round trip with the Grugabahn along a route of 3.3 km provides an eventful overview over the entire park area. On Saturday and Sunday afternoons in summer, visitors can listen to concerts in the music garden that range from the classics, via spirituals, to pop music, and from folkmusic to jazz. An attractive event programme with open air events featuring international top stars, summer festivals, numerous children's events, and additional special actions annually fascinates young and old visitors alike. | Grillo-Theater |
| The repertoire of the Grillo-Theater includes classical drama texts as well as the works of modern classics and present day authors. Today, audiences see the "Grillo" as standing for young unpretentious plays. The neo-classicistic Essen playhouse is named after the industrialist Friedrich Grillo. He gave the building to the city in 1887. |
