Zeche Carl, a coal mine shut down permanently in 1970 and now a listed monument, is one of the centres of the alternative culture scene today. Zeche Carl is numbered among Germany's oldest and largest socio-cultural centres.
The list of events ranges from rock, blues, pop and punk concerts, through satire and comedy, to exhibitions and panel discussions, music, sport and creative courses.

| These workings erected in Bauhaus style in 1932 were shut down in 1986 as the last remaining Essen colliery. Once the largest and most beautiful colliery buildings in Europe, today the site is an industrial monument of international repute. The most intriguing areas of mining and colliery history - production equipment, tippler shop, coal washery, and boiler house - can be visited. Another part of the enormous colliery has been rededicated to a new use. The Design Center North-Rhine Westphalia is located there, and there are rooms available for conferences, congresses, and parties. The "Casino Zollverein" provides a restaurant facility in a historical industrial environment. |
