In Germany, healthcare is based on a system of health insurance. If you are seeking asylum in Germany, you will not initially have health insurance. Government agencies guarantee your healthcare. These are, for example, the social welfare office or the health authority. Healthcare includes treatment from a doctor or dentist and necessary immunisations and medical check-ups.

The government agencies work together with all of the institutions within the health sector.

You will be examined and treated by a doctor if

  • you are acutely ill
  • you are in pain
  • you are pregnant.

Children, expectant mothers, victims of torture and violence and people with disabilities are considered particularly in need of protection. Your needs will be given special consideration when you receive medical care.
