RUHR.2010 - European Capital of Culture

In 2010, Essen was awarded the title of "European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010" as the standard-bearer for the Ruhrgebiet. Essen presented itself as very hospitable and cosmopolitan. Around 1,000 events were held in Essen alone, including the Still-Leben ("Still Life") project and Schachtzeichen ("Mine Symbols"), generating worldwide media resonance. Essen and the region thus profited not only from 1.5 million euros in subsidies, but also from the media attention, which resulted in increased tourism and an image transformation. In addition, the title awarded was the driving force behind numerous construction projects in Essen.
