Welcome to the "Old Synagogue" Essen

House of Jewish Culture

The "Old Synagogue", today a cultural institution of the city of Essen, is located in the former synagogue of the Jewish community of Essen. The building was one of the largest and most architecturally significant, detached synagogues in Europe of the 20th century. Today it is a unique cultural monument.

There are permanent exhibitions for Jewish, German-Jewish history and Jewish contemporary culture. Concerts and lectures complete the program.

It is well worth a visit!

Due to renovation works, several areas of the Old Synagogue will no longer be accessible from July 18, 2023. Unfortunately, the side entrance Alfredistraße (disabled entrance) will be closed, too. We are sorry for this inconvenience.
