Welcome to the "Old Synagogue" Essen

House of Jewish Culture

The "Old Synagogue", today a cultural institution of the city of Essen, is located in the former synagogue of the Jewish community of Essen. The building was one of the largest and most architecturally significant, detached synagogues in Europe of the 20th century. Today it is a unique cultural monument.

There are permanent exhibitions for Jewish, German-Jewish history and Jewish contemporary culture. Actual events complement the program.

There is a new audioguide with 31 texts giving deeper information on the permanent exhibition in English. Please ask at the counter on the right hand side after the entrance. You will be asked to hand out a personal identity card.

Well worth a visit!
